Unfortunately there are SCAM artists that travel all the sites hoping to find an unsuspecting seller or buyer. These are the same ones with the same Scams that you may find locally when advertising in your local newspaper. The internet is a new market for them. The good news is that these people are very easy to distinguish. You just need to be wise to their schemes. Please read below and email WhatBike.ie if you have any questions. Sellers Beware: No legitimate company will offer to pay you by arranging to send you a cheque and asking you to wire some of the money back. If you receive this offer, it is a scam! Buyers Beware: Scammers have begun advertising very high-end bikes on many web sites with an asking price that is too good to be true. PLEASE be very cautious with ads which:
Example of a common Scam: Things to look for: Counterfeit Cheques If you received an Official Bank Draft for the sale of your vehicle there are some things you should look for to help prevent you from being the victim of negotiating a fraudulent Bank cheque. Counterfeit Cheques are probably the easiest to create, but may be a little harder to detect with today’s technology. A counterfeit cheque may be a copy of a genuine cheque, copied on a printer or copy machines. A counterfeit cheque may also be an actual cheque, printed with a home computer and software program, using someone else’s information.
After reviewing the above if you are still not certain, take the cheque to your financial institution. Do not deposit the cheque into your account, ask your Bank to send the item “for collection”. Your account will be credited only when the funds are received by the financial institution that the cheque is drawn on. Money Transfers: Are money transfers any safer? That really depends on the circumstances. If you are selling a vehicle and the buyer offers to send you money via wire you are going to have to provide that person with your bank routing number and account number, they already have your name and most likely your address. Make sure that you have made a positive identification on the individual before considering a wire transfer. Talk to your banker about how money should be transfered and what precautions should be taken. WhatBike.ie do not phone our private advertisers, beware of anyone calling claiming they are from WhatBike.ie and that they need to clarify details of the advert and credit card information. Be very cautious and don't give out any personal details or credit card details over the phone. We constantly monitor our site and cancel ads that meet the above criteria but sometimes ads slip through our review. If you find an ad of this type please email us immediately. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! BACK TO TOPBUYING A BIKE | SELLING A BIKE | SCAM ALERT |
